Chapters can earn gold, silver, or bronze ratings at the state level, with gold chapters eligible to compete at the national level.
National-level awards include 3-star, 2-star, and 1-star chapters, National Premier Chapter Awards, Models of Excellence, and Middle School Models of Excellence.

FOR FRESHMAN MEMBERS
The primary award is the Greenhand FFA Degree. This degree is the first level of achievement and recognizes first-year members who are actively involved in agriculture and the FFA. Additionally, freshmen can pursue Agricultural Proficiency Awards, which recognize outstanding Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) programs.
A Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) is a student-led, instructor-supervised, work-based learning experience in agriculture, food, and natural resources. It allows students to apply classroom learning in real-world settings through hands-on projects and activities. SAEs are a core component of agricultural education, providing students with practical experience and preparing them for future careers.
Agricultural Proficiency Awards recognize FFA members who excel in their supervised agricultural experience (SAE) projects. These awards are based on the skills and competencies developed through hands-on experience in specific agricultural areas. FFA members compete in various areas, ranging from agricultural communications to wildlife management, showcasing their expertise in their chosen field.
The Chapter Star Greenhand Award is a prestigious honor presented annually within an FFA chapter to recognize the most active first-year member who demonstrates a strong supervised agricultural experience (SAE) and leadership within the chapter. This award is given to a student who is actively engaged in their FFA Greenhand Degree requirements and exhibits potential for future success in agricultural education
FOR SOPHOMORE MEMBERS
For sophomore FFA members, the Chapter FFA Degree is the second degree of active membership they can earn, following the Greenhand FFA Degree. To receive this degree, sophomores typically need to have already earned their Greenhand degree and then meet additional requirements, including completing specific agricultural education coursework and demonstrating active participation in FFA activities.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
Prerequisites: Sophomores must have already received the Greenhand FFA Degree.
Agricultural Education: They need to have completed a certain number of hours (typically 180 hours or the equivalent) of systematic school instruction in agricultural education at the ninth grade level or above, according to Booker ISD.
Active Participation: Meeting the active participation requirements often involves engaging in various FFA activities, such as attending meetings, participating in contests, holding a chapter office, or completing a supervised agricultural experience (SAE).
Proficiency Awards recognize their accomplishments in Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs). These awards are given at the chapter level and beyond, acknowledging members' specialized skills developed through their SAEs.
Sophomores can apply for proficiency awards in various categories based on their SAE projects. For example, a sophomore involved in a landscaping SAE might apply for the Agricultural Services proficiency, while another working in an agricultural sales setting could apply for Agricultural Sales.
Proficiency Awards Explained:
Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs):
These hands-on projects allow FFA members to explore potential career paths and develop practical skills related to agriculture.
Levels of Recognition:
Proficiency awards are presented at the local chapter level, then progress to state and national levels, according to the National FFA Organization.
Application Process:
To apply for a proficiency award, students need to be dedicated to their project, maintain an up-to-date AET record book, and work with their advisor to complete the application.
Key Considerations:
Dedication and Record Keeping:
Success in proficiency awards hinges on a student's commitment to their SAE and maintaining accurate records in their AET.
Advisor Collaboration:
Working closely with their FFA advisor is crucial for navigating the application process and ensuring the application is well-prepared.
Career Pathways:
Proficiency awards help students explore potential career paths and gain valuable skills that can be applied in their future careers.
The Star Chapter FFA Award isn't a specific award for sophomores. It's a broader award recognizing overall chapter excellence and achievement, focusing on leadership, activities, and Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) programs. Sophomores can certainly be involved in the activities that contribute to a chapter earning this award, but it's not a sophomore-specific recognition.
Star Chapter Award:
This award is given to FFA chapters that demonstrate excellence in various areas, including FFA participation, school activities, scholastic achievement, and SAE programs.
Sophomore Involvement:
Sophomores can be actively involved in all aspects of chapter life, contributing to the overall success that leads to the Star Chapter Award.
Other Awards:
Sophomores can also pursue other FFA awards like the Greenhand FFA Degree, Chapter FFA Degree, and Proficiency Awards based on their SAEs.
Star Awards:
The "Star" awards, like Star Farmer, Star in Agribusiness, Star in Agriscience, and Star in Ag Placement, are individual awards recognizing outstanding SAEs.
